Redemption Box

Deafening silence in the dead of night
Restless insomniac wrestled with his thoughts
Counting the minutes to another sunrise
Another day ahead feeling out of sorts

He opened the packet of mind numbing drugs
Prescribed pills to halt his mind's descent
The contents emptied on to the table
Refusing to ingest them in a show of dissent

He arranged them in the shape of a heart
Then cut a line through his display
Symbolizing the grief of his broken world
A love turned sour, then left to decay

Fatigued, distraught, angry and upset
The broken heart was swept to the floor
His street of shattered dreams stretched before him
Asked himself can he take any more?

He stumbled upstairs and lay on the bed
Staring into space then up at a shelf
A dusty box lay in his line of vision
The time had come to start healing himself

Decades of stored sentiments from family and friends
Breathing deeply as he read the soothing words
"Good Luck", "Congratulations", "Well Done", "With Love"
With received heart-felt kindness, an epiphany occurred

The pills discarded, his confidence restored
A new train of thought to explore for relief
His slow recovery would still be painful
Days lay ahead still filled with grief

His tide of self-pity receded from view
His loved ones gifts were still giving
The contents of the box had saved his soul
The gift of life was worth living
